Now that we have a sequel to the immortal Spinal Tap movie, it's time to look back at where it all began. Rob Reiner's film was a work of comedic genius.
Here are the best, most iconic lines from the original 1984 Spinal Tap film.
1. "These go to 11." And "Well, it's 1 louder, isn't it?" Nigel explains to Marty that his amps are louder because they go to 11. Marty asks why he doesn't just make 10 louders, and Nigel pauses... and say, "These go to 11." Nuff said.
2. "It's a fine line between stupid and clever." David says this when it is explained to the band that having a girl tied up or leashed on the cover was wrong but having the band tied up was acceptable.
3. "Well you would though, if it were playing." Nigel tells Marty to listen to the sustain, and Marty says he doesn't hear anything. He would if it were playing.
4. "This piece is called Lick My Love Pump." Nigel says in response to a lovely soft piano melody.
5. "It's so black. It's like how much more black can it be? And the answer is none. None more black." When the band was shown their new album cover, it was nothing but a black cover with no writing. A Beatles White Album takeoff. The band didn't like it.
6. "Money talks and bullshit walks." Fran Drescher as publicist Bobbi Flekman. The manager looks at her as if she's nuts. Which... she was.
7. "He died in a bizarre gardening accident." Explaining what happened to all their drummers. And another one, "he exploded on stage."
8. "You're authorized, you're the musicians, aren't you?" The band gets lost on their way to the stage. This isn't really a line, more of a scene, but funny. A janitor tells them how to get to the stage and find a door: Authorized Personnel Only. They never find it.
9. "We've got armadillos in our pants."
10. "You should have seen the cover they wanted to do. It wasn't a glove, believe me."
Enjoy the movie one more time. It's timeless and brilliant. Now we can make it a double feature. The best lines from Spinal Tap 1984 are really... all of them.
