Best Horror Movie Sequels of All Time

Any movie sequel is hard to make, but the horror movie genre is known for spinning out sequel after sequel. It seems that success doesn't even play a role in it: there are multiple sequels to Critters, Saw, Leprechaun, Sharknado, and Troll (all horrifically awful). Turning our head to the good films, a few of them had truly brilliant sequels. At Top2040, here are the top 20 Horror Movie Sequels of all time:

1 – Damien: Omen 2 (1978) The story of the devil's son is continued, now as a teenager. Since most teens are frightening on their own, you can imagine the devil's spawn as a teen. Well-directed, this is one of the best horror movie sequels to his the big screen.

2 – John Carpenter's Halloween II (1981) A very effective, creepy continuation of the night he came home. The movie picks up with the last few seconds of the first film, follows Laurie to the hospital, and Michael across town on a continued rampage to find his sister.

3 – Friday the 13th Part II (1981) The first full appearance of Jason Voorhees as an adult, and really the beginning of the series. It was an unexpected hit sequel.

4 – Army of Darkness (1993) The second sequel to The Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell was the best chainsaw-armed man in town.

5 – Dawn of the Dead (1978) first sequel to Night of the Living Dead, zombies in Pittsburgh's Monroeville Mall.

6 – Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) More of the immortal, lovable Pinhead.

7 – Jeepers Creepers II (2003) Once every 23 years the creature gets to eat for 23 days. A bus full of students its new dinner. Not as creepy as the first, but it's a pretty good sequel.

8 – It Lives Again (1978) The sequel to “It's Alive” this time with three mutant babies on a killing spree. Very much Frankenstein and Phantom of the Opera in tone and feel.

9 – Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: the Dream Warriors (1987)

10 – Phantasm II (1988) The return of the Tall Man.

11 – Insidious Chapter 2 (2013) the spirits aren't done with the Lamberts yet.

12 – Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) Werewolf vs. vampire, well acted and directed.

13 – Bride of Re-Animator (1990) Based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft.

14 – Scream 2 (1997) Nothing special, but it's worth watching. Among sequels, that's enough.

15 – American Werewolf in Paris (1997) Sequel to an American Werewolf in London.

16 – Blade II (2002) Blade has to team up with the vampires to fight a new evil.

17 – Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge (1991) More evil puppets on the loose!

18 – Pumpkinhead 3: Ashes to Ashes (1997) While not living up the the masterpiece of the first movie, this third sequel does have some moxie. Lance Henriksen returns for this one.

19 – Child's play 4: Bride of Chucky (1998) the only sequel to the Chucky movies worth watching. It was well-directed by Ronny Yu.

20 – Land of the Dead (2005) Another follow-up to Night of the Living Dead, this time in Pittsburgh with zombie hordes crossing the Three Rivers.

Jaws 2 was an excellent sequel, but doesn't really qualify as horror. Tremors 2 was also good, but again... is it horror?

The Paranormal Activity films were the worst sequels to hit the screen, but then the first movie was a pile of crap... so we can't really expect more there.

Other bad sequels to good films: The Howling 2 – 5, Children of the Corn 2 – 4, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, 28 Days Later, and the Exorcist 2-4. All of these had excellent first films with a very questionable franchise of sequels.

The horror movie sequel is a tradition in Hollywood, especially if cheaply made. This list might direct you to some of the better films: not stellar films, but the lesser of evils in horror movie sequels.
