Top 20 Twist Endings in Horror Movies

Twist endings are fun in any movie, and especially in horror movies. It's nice when the twist ending catches us by surprise. Too often, we see it coming a mile away.  When we do get caught in a twist, unaware of the ending, it's a wonderful experience.  Even when they are gimmicks, they are cool to see.

These are the 20 most shocking and surprising twist endings in horror movies.

Official Top2040 Warning: Possible spoiler alert! We tried to limit revealing the actual ending, but some text and clues may give it away. Proceed with caution.

- Friday the 13th (1978) Before Jason became the villain, who was the real first killer? Then, when we think it's all over, the young boy Jason erupts from peaceful lake.  A great ending to a horror movie, and the catalyst that fueled the need for more slasher films.

- Sleepaway Camp (1983) Angela and her brother go off to camp, where murders occur daily. An ending so bizarre and surprising, you have to see it to believe it.

- Pyscho (1968) we find out the truth about Mother in the end.

- Carnival of Souls (1962) Long before the Sixth Sense, this movie was the first to feature (Spoiler:) a main character who turns out to be dead.

- Alone in the Dark (1982) This movies, starring Donald Pleasance, has one of the best opening scenes and an excellent twist ending.

- High Tension (aka Haute Tension). In this 2005 French film, the killer turns out to be an unexpected character in the movie.

- Seven (1995), aka Se7en, about the seven deadly sins. Stars Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, and Morgan Freeman.  "What's in the box?"

- My Bloody Valentine (1981) - later remade in 2009. As revenge for a mining accident that happened on Valentine's day twenty years before, anyone who throws a V Day party in subsequent years gets killed. But we find out the motives are actually much different, and the killer is an unexpected twist.

- The Sixth Sense (2001) "I see dead people. Sometimes, they don't know they're dead."

- Donnie Darko (2001) Too bizarre to spoil in a few words. A very cool movie.

- The Fog (1980) The killer lepers return for one more unexpected kill. A snappy ending to a seminal ghost film.

- The Others (2001)  Who's haunting whom?

- Friday the 13th Part IX (1992) while the movie was disappointing, the final scene is awesome: Freddy's hand (Nightmare on Elm Street) comes up from the ground and pulls Jason's mask into the ground. This was the teaser to the Fred vs. Jason movie.

- Session 9 (2001)  A crew cleaning up an abandoned asylum finds disturbing things, begin to get killed off; and the ending reveals that things are not as we thought.

- Les Diaboliques (1955) A murder gone wrong. The corpse isn't dead.

- The Mist (2007)  SPOILER: The main characters killed themselves for nothing.  The growl of more new creatures turns out to be the groan of tanks. Help has arrived, 2 minutes too late.

- Pumpkinhead (1988)  Ed Harley, who summoned the creature, becomes the creature at the end, after the kill has run its course.

- April Fool's Day (1986) a bit of a cheat ending, but you can guess it from the title. The killer isn't just one person involved either.

- Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985) SPOILER: Jason Voorhees isn't the killer in this movie. It wasn't Tommy either (as we're led to suspect).  It's someone else. This is one of 2 "Friday the 13th" movies where Jason isn't the killer.

- Saw (2004) Technically it's not a horror movie, it's a torture movie (and a bad one at that).  But it is pretty cool when the killer stands up.  He's been lying on the floor pretending to be dead the whole time. It's a bit gimmicky, but also surprising.
