25 Best Big Monster Movies

The best big monsters in cinema: the biggest and scariest giant monsters in movies.

Excluding dinosaurs, Japanese Godzilla and Kaiju movies, of which there are too many to list, these are the best giant monsters in the movies. Organic and live monsters only, no robots or transformers, these are the best big beasts. Our criteria for non-Japanese monsters: the creatures must be biological, bigger than a building, and the central focus of the story. Note: it's the monsters that are giant, not the movies. The best Giant Monster Movies at the cinema from Top2040:

1 - King Kong (1933) The big daddy of all monster movies, with loads of giant monsters to see. Kong isn't the only giant in this film.

2 - Cloverfield (2008) This alien monster towers over the city, higher than a skyscraper. Well filmed documentary of an actual invasion.

3 - Godzilla (2014) The 2nd American Gojira really hits the spot. Battling 2 giant Mutos, there is no disappointment for fans of giant monsters in movies.

4 - Garuda (2004) Thai movie about the mythical winged creature Garuda attacking modern day Bangkok.

5 - The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) Ray Harryhausen's brilliant stop-motion!

6 - Deep Rising (1998) Pirates attack a cruise ship, but a giant ocean creature interrupts their plunder.

7 - The Host (2006) South Korean monster movie about a creature hunting people and taking them back to its nest in the sewers.

8 - Monsters (2010) Mexico is quarantined, infested by giant aliens. A field reporter escorts a woman safely through the danger zone.

9 - "Trollhunter" (2010) An acclaimed Swedish film about a giant troll.

10 - 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) A huge lizard creature lands on Earth.

11 - Jason and the Argonauts (1963) A bevy of big creatures in stop-motion glory.

12 - King Kong (2005) The remake is actually pretty good, especially for "big monster" value.

13 - Clash of the Titans (1981) The original really packs in the creatures.

14 - Clash of the Titans (2010) The kraken in the remake is an especially fun monster.

15 - Tarantula (1955) Bigger than a house, creeping through town, eating cars and people on the way.

16 - D-War (2007) Another South Korean beast fest with dragon type creatures.

17 - Beowulf (2007) First the ogre creature and then the dragon beast. Two for the price of one.

18 - The Deadly Mantis (1957) Thawed from ice in the arctic, this giant monster heads straight for the big
city to nest and feed.  A Top2040 favorite!

19 - Godzilla (1998) yes the acting and writing stank, but the giant lizard itself was a lot of fun!

20 - It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955) More Harryhausen brilliance.

21 - Skyline (2010) The alien creature is pretty cool, despite the slow pace of the movie's first half.

22 - Repilicus (1961) the giant reptile is on the loose.

23 - The Giant Gila Monster (1959) A real lizard tearing down model trains, ah... I miss the oldies!

24 - Monster from the Ocean Floor (1954) A bit hokey, but well played on screen.

25 - Ogre (2008) townies make sacrifices to a giant Ogre to keep him away from their town.

Favorite Japanese movies: Gamera the Brave (2006)
Destroy all Monsters (1968)
Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

We saw lots of big monsters in Lord of the Rings, John Carter and others, but they were not the central focus of the story - the plot was not about killing the creatures. They were not "monster movies," but were movies with monsters in them.

Monster movies and the monsters in them are a special thing, we love them in our own way.
