Everyone loves a good dragon on film, but a lot of dragon movies don't live up to expectations. Fortunately, a few lizard-laden gems have emerged from Hollywood, and here is a list of those rare great Dragon movies. Our Top 10 dragon list actually has 15 movies, so you get a bonus! Animations have been excluded, as only live-action movies are here. The best live-action dragon movies of all time:
1 - Dragonslayer (1981) Ralph Richardson.
The best of all dragon movies, with great special effects and an original story. A wizard enlists the help of his apprentice to go after Vermithrax Pejorative, an old dragon that still torments nearby towns. Incredible dragon effects; well directed and well played.
2 - The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
based on Tolkien's immortal novel which came before The Lord of the Rings. The opening scene to its sequel, "The Battle of the Five Armies" has an excellent dragon sequence, showing Smaug on the rampage.
3 - Reign of Fire (2002) Christian Bale.
In the future, London is overrun by thousands of dragons, and a strike team intends to kill the remaining one male dragon. The problem is that hundreds of female dragons surround him. Highly recommended dragon movie.
4 - DragonHeart (1996) Featuring the voice of Sean Connery. The last dragon helps a village fight off their oppressors.
5 - Q: The Winged Serpert (1982) Michael Moriarty gives a great performance! An egg has hatched on a rooftop in New York City, and an ancient dragon emerges to hunt. A great under-appreciated movie.
6 - Fire and Ice : The Dragon Chronicles (2008) Some interesting creature designs here.
7 - Dragon Wars , aka D-War (2007) A South Korean film, featuring one of the coolest dragons ever to torment a modern city. Very fun to watch!
8 - Eragon (2006) Good dragon vs. evil dragon, what more could you want? Decent story and effects. A boy finds a dragon egg and imprints on a newly hatched dragon. Eventually he decides to help defend the world from an evil wizard and his evil dragon. Universally panned, but it's not bad.
9 - George and the Dragon (2004) has some fun moments, and is worth a look.
10 - Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) The dragon who loves to play with Godzilla, this classic rounds out the list of best dragon movies.
Honorable Mention: Taro was a cool dragon in the "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" (1977) and there's a gruesome dragon at the end of Beowulf (2007).
Merlin and the War of the Dragons (2008);
Dragon Hunters (2008) Some of the worst acting ever on film, is countered and saved by some very cool dragon scenes. A good film for dragon fans, just don't get too excited about plot, writing, or acting. One cool character and a very spiffy dragon will keep you going to the end.
Paladan: dawn of the dragonslayer (2011) features a well-crafted dragon.
You would think that the "Dungeons & Dragons" movie would be an obvious choice, but the movie was so bad - partly due to bad acting and writing - that it fails to make the list.
