1 - The Big Short (2015). Stevel Carell and Christian Bale star in the most compelling darkly-comedic look at the subprime loan financial crisis. It is based on a true story.


2 - Margin Call (2011) Incredible film starring Zachary Quinto, Jeremy Irons, and Kevin Spacey. It's a thriller about a young new broker/analyst who discovers a flaw in the current market and predicts an eminent collapse. While fiction, it is loosely based on the actions of several real firms prior to the crash of 2008. Easily a tie with #1 for stock market movies.

3 - Boiler Room (2000) A college dropout gets a job as a broker but it's not what he thought it would be, and scams prevail.

4 - Too Big To Fail (2011) William Hurt, Paul Giamatti, Ed Asner. Based on Andrew Sorkin's novel, it tells the story of the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the subsequent 2008 financial crisis.

5 - Wall Street (1987) One of the earliest and best-known of the financial movies. Charlie and Marin Sheen star alongside Michael Douglas. It's famous tagline: "Greed is good."

6 - Inside Job (2010) - Matt Damon. This film takes place in the days leading up to the 2008 financial crisis.

7 -  Trading Places (1983) A comedy about wealth and the advantages that come with it. It culminates with a trading scheme on the commodity futures market.

8 - The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) Leo DiCaprio stars in Marin Scorcese's dark comedy about a stock broker who knows no boundaries.

9 - Rogue Trader (1999) A single trading brought down an entire bank.
